Two Mustangs Extreme Mustang Makeover

In gods hands!

I was battling with some personal fear isues tangled deep in the boys work. After a few very hard mustangs I realized my core was shaken. Still chasing the cure for the last damaging kick recived over a year ago. I was holding back being cautious. Sitting on Fezzik forever holding a death grip on the rail as if it would save me. Asking my husband how do I not be afraid. How do i slow my heart rate, function and teach?

He is so wize! He said there just comes a point where your just going to have to pony up and do it or walk away. I was not happy, I think I chidded over that answer, easy for him to say. I did some crying and pouting. Then I heard him, really heard him, and myself. I tell people over and over I truly believe god puts each of these horses here in my path for a reason. Each and everyone of them teachs me more than I teach them. They all give me an answer I need to find in myself.

My answer are her I just have to wait and find the questions. I have to belive it is gods will I have these horses in my life for the time I have with them. To take a breath and let it be gods choice how it will go allows me not to worry and just do. What a revelation! What will be will be and hopefully my knowledge will carry me through.

The boys are doing amazing. Fezzik is walking and backing and turning in his stall. He is funny all the things that should bother mustangs don't bother him one bit! People, horseback riders, ect. He loves being brushed. I am getting closer to picking feet. I got one tonite. He thinks I want him to lay down so he flops down when I try to pick his feet up...oops. I only laid him down once. I am getting more comfotable with his hind end, walking behind him, and touching hinds.

Fezzik is a pig and loves grain. To him I equal grain, so good. He likes going out for walks and if I walk over it he will. He is so forward and pushy, but loving and smart!

Inigo....I knew he was coming! I warned everyone if I bought a Friesian I would get a mustang with action and presence that would rival him. I bought Dante before the contest and sure enough...Ini has a huge trot, with action a park horse would crave. Floats like a cloud. His canter is so beautiful. If he is moving no one looks away. He has a huge flowing mane and forlock, and great tail too! Such beauty.

He is wearing a saddle finnaly, blanket at night. He is easy and soft. Easy to lead and take around. Tonite I introduced him to a flag, and lounged him in the outdoor with kids riding. He did wonderful. I know we are not riding yet, but ground work in place we will be soon.

I dropped inigo's lead accidentally on the trail yesterday, and i said come here, and he trotted right up to me....too cute.

So I pray for forward motiona and will do all I can to be riding both as soon as possible.

Travlers

As coach of the OHSET team I was spending the weekend at the meet, so why not take a few wild horses! I got the girls there and set up and headed hom to see if they would load. I decided to load inigo as I was more comfortable shutting his divider gate. I took a lounge attached to his lead up through the window and around to me back by him....He was tense at first of the trailer, but walked in within 5 minutes without any pressure. I was able to shut the divider with easee and tie him in for travel.

Fezzik was nervious too. I wanted to use the same method, but Be careful as Fezzik cannot be pushed or he may resist. He took his time and waited until I walked behind him with the lounge gave and waked it. I really thought he was going to kick the door as I shut it. He did not. I made sure to let both boys stand for 5 minutes before shutting door behind them, and another 5 before driving off. They hauled great. Would have never known they were there.

We arrived really late 9pm, (late for me), it was reasonable quiet at the meet. I was able to open untie and catch a nervious Fezzy and lead him right into the stall. He did hesitate in the door way a bit. I was so torn on bringing him as he has been tolerating me sitting on him in the eves.

Inigo took a little longer as I could not ge tahold of his rope. He was so tense and took longer to decide it was okay to go inside the stall. the noise of the place and buzyness were so great for the boys. So many people touched and loved on them too. Fezzik ate it up, but Inigo was not so sure. In the eves I was able to take them on walks around the fairgrounds. It was amazing, loads of noises, sights and people horses ect.

Inigo loved the grass really chowed down doing his part to mow the state fair grounds. We really even heard gun shots. I wandered over with both boys to sit by the cars at night.

It was so good for them. It really helped Ini figure some things out. He finnaly let me get a saddle quietly cinched on him. It was great. I could see he was a ticking bomb so I untacked him. Today I was able to resaddle, but when I left him saddled he had a panic tantrum then got it together. I let him wearr it for most of the morning. Then I took him out walked around with no bucking at all. I untacked and took him out for a walk.

whew

Progress. I have been feeling so sad Inigo is so far behind Fezzik! tonite he was better about the saddle. I was able to throw the saddle over with cinch hanging without loosing him. I asked him to trot on the lead today and he just bounced along with me...I doubt Fez will do that so easy. He still does not love me bouncing around him, and he tried hard in one panic tantrum to get away, he is getting that he won't. I however am ready for a bank robbery with my burned hands. Just kidding.

I also had such a huge break through with his legs. He would not let me touch below his knee. I just kept at it. It is challenging as I have to hold his head and keep him from biting me...he thinks I want to play tyhe game where we bite each others feet out from one another. He allowed me to hold both frounts tonite...Yippy. Break through.

Fezzik is so great about saddleing and bridleing now. Still hard to lead some times as he gets frisky. I was a bit worried about picking up his feet simnce yesterday I decided to lay him down as he was walking all over me. He laid down all to happy and tryed to roll. He was actually so good about his frounts, I decided to venture to the hinds I fear so much. I ran my hand down and as always he did no move. I decided to push soft away until something happened at the hock area was the best manuver. He just gave soft and moved away.

Into his stall we went. He now understands step up to the fence. I sat on him, keeping both feet on the fence. I slid my leg over him several times keeping one foot on the fence. Pulled on the sturip, stepped on it leaned over him...then I just swug over and sat. It felt really nice and he could care less as usual. I stepped off knowing I will get him there.

Great weather

I ponied both boys today around a small trail loop. I was really hoping I did not loose them to spend the day finding wild boys. Fezzik first was bold and fallowed head glued to my leg. I think he really loved it. I lost him as we re-entered the arena..busted in took off across the arena, then trotted right back up to us.

I had Fezzik out when i came up to the arena and he was laying down basking in the sun by inigo's stall. I walked over expecting him to get up right away. No he let me pet him. All over, then I could not resist. I sat on him both feet on one side. Okay I swung my leg over and sat on him. He took it for a minute, and then decided to roll while I was sitting on him. I had no choice but to hop off.

IInigo was good at ponying I headed for the out gate...right then he bolted away and took off into the arena and safty. I was able to ride up to him lean over and take the leadrope again. We headed out, this time Inigo was feeling more bolt. He was very nervious walking down by lower barn, and when the loose horses started to come up. He handled it well. Funny though I opened the arena up and in he bolted. He is barly letting me set the saddle on him asfter a ton of sacking out, then he wants to bolt away so bad. I want to saddle him bad, but I do not want to scare him either.

http://www.newportnewstimes.com/v2_news_articles.php?heading=0&page=72&story_id=33276 link to the short version of our News times frount page article! So fun.

I started with Fezzik as we had friends here to watch! I ponied him from Weston again with more ease this time, just focusing on keeping him from biting me or Weston the whole way.  He got nervious once when a horse ran by the arena. We had another rider in the arena on a green horse at the same time too. It went pretty well. I did however leave him by Inigo to untack Weston. He usually wont venture away from Inigo. he did, trotted right up to the other rider much to her surprise too. he was very interested and not one bit afraid. I had to go catch him quickly. He saddled with ease and finnally relaxed and let me bridle him. I did some yeilding, and some step ups in the sturrips leting him start to feel my weight pulling on his side. Then a new horse arrived at the stables and away went my focus.

Inigo in the eve. Easy tocatch and halter. Nervious when we start. leading really well, but can be hesitant. He is so stinking cute, but not flying along in training. Today i was happy when I finnaly got to set the saddle on his back for the first time. Set it normal, not sneak quietly. He was really tense about stirrup movemement. I worked with the rope around his body and around his girth to see if he could relax when pulled on by a cinch. He did settle after a panic attack or two.

I did sit on Fezzik in his stall and let my legs hang down each side crawling on from the fence...he is not sure how e feels about it but I doubt he will do much.

Two steps forward one step forward..yes forward....always.

Fezzik is loving being brushed too much. even down his back legs. He was a bit mouthy today, looking to nibble on me any chance he gets. He want to bit my shoes...He is easy to saddle and resists the bridle a bit...It coukld be because he has huge wolfe teeth. I am going to have to get them pulled soon. I decided to try a blanket today too..He really could care less when I put it over his head, set it on back and moved over his hips...then he started to move and the straps hit his back legs...he half heartely trotted a lap gave a snort and settled back down right away! He did manage to take it off by himself a half hour later.

we are working on tying. He is not a fan of patience, and sitting still, but he gives to the rope easy. I spent the evening climbing on him i the stall..I can get on him from the rail, but not the ground yet. He does not really care, but I hold my breath when starting to mount and that makes him worry. He is really staring to fallow along like a puppy. Fezzik took his first treat today (shades of Bumblebee) Huge teeth grab, no quiet lips for sure. Really close to sitting on him, any day now. Lifting his feet forward now.

Inigo the beautiful. He is so soft and really scared himself when a saddle fell off him in the arena. He would panic any time I tried to show it to him. Finnaly after two daysof petting him with the saddle tonite he allowed me to set it on his back several times from each side. Whew...He also is very ticklish around his barrel, hates to be touched there..not good for cinching later. Today I was able to use a cotton lead rope all the way around his barrel to put pressure all the way around. This encited pure panic, but he did not get away from me, after stoping his every direction panic run feet he stopped licked and chewed. He is getting braver each day, but has to decide I am safe. But to compare Weston was bolting so hard and fast he was getting away from me still two weeks for before we competed. I am able to hold both boys through 99% of their panics...

I am so excited to have two big nice looking great moving boys this year!

Pony the ponies!

Decided to try to pony the boys today so we can enjoy the good weather soon. inigo was scared, and went into his calf stance but really surprised me when he stood while I mounted Weston (my 2009 makeover horse). Weston gave him good tugs I am not able to when he locks up. He fallowed well. We even did a few laps trotting. He would come up and let me love on him from the saddle by the end.

Fezzik came out strong. Right up next to my leg from the strart. I rode right up to him to take his lead..Did not bother him a bit. Hoever when he wanted to stop he told Weston, but shooting forward and threatning him. Such stallion traits. We got trotting down, but both Weston and I had to keep checking his ego.

I am still sacking out Inigo, but he is easy to halter now and no longer wears his halter and lead rope. He is easy to bridler too..scared of the saddle though.

Fezzik is great to saddle, worries about being bridled. He is lifting his frount feet well now too.

Easter brings trailer bunnies

I worked Inigo first. leading and starting to sack out with the pad and saddle...he bolts away at saddle most times. Hi leading and backing have imporoved a ton. I am able to go farther back and down his legs now with touch and brushing. I decided to take his halter off as he is easy to halter now.

Fezzik has improved and learnered to walk back, and so much more, but today he was having to much fun in tiny bursts. He would be laid back and perfect, then...poof..bot or rear or buck..then quietly fallowing again. it was comical except he could tell it made me tense which always makes him come for me. He is not aggressive just fallowing his attention. I was able to put weight into the stirup too.

Easter party over...I have the trailer hooked up from yesterdays show still..hmmm. I took the trailer to the arena and unglued my mister rock steady. I parked inside and Fezzik was pacing his pen in a panic. I have never seen him like that. He was scared to death. running and bolting around the arena for two laps. Then he came up scared and snorting and allowed me to lead him up, and let him sniff. He was willing to walk right him. I stopped and praised him at two feet. Backed him out and put him back in his stall to rest. I was not sure how good it would go if he busted right in.

Inigo was scared too...only bolted away once before he treble stepped behind me up to the trailer. It took about a half hour of baby steps forward, keeping his nose facing forward and releasing any time he thought about the trailer. He stepped up calm and stood there for a good 5 minutes. I backed him up soft and he walked easy back to his stall.

Whew..to date neither boy has broke a sweat...some day they will :) Trust first!
